Biography
Michael O. Freeman has been the Hennepin County Attorney for over 20 years, first in the 1990s and now for the past 14 years. Freeman was elected for his sixth term in 2018. After a difficult reelection campaign, his office has begun to implement reforms, such as requesting lower bail amounts, making it easier for individuals to recover forfeited property, and expunge criminal records. However, despite these reforms, Freeman has stopped short of ending punitive prosecutions and addressing worrisome racial disparities in Hennepin County’s criminal justice system.
